“Don’t give me those sad eyes.” You grimace before sighing deeply. “Fine, have it your way.” You untie her reins from the tree. The horse backs up a few steps, tilting her head quizzically at you. “Go on, get back to the palace. Eat hay, trot around the paddock.” She blinks, but makes no move to leave. “Go on!” You swat your palm across her rump and she whinnies in surprise before bolting back down the track. You watch as she gallops down the road. If she follows her nose, it will take her back to Summerhold. You turn and glance into the shadowy darkness of the forest of whispers, your destiny lying along a different path. With a sigh, you hoist your pack over your shoulder and strike out into the woods.

You are only a few paces beyond the treeline when you begin to understand the sinister reputation the forest has gained. The towering oak trees are ancient, gnarled and twisted while the dense canopy of leaves high above lets very little sunlight through it. The sound of the wind blowing through the branches seems to whistle and whisper. The sounds of unseen creatures scuttling through the undergrowth or birdsong from the branches above both seem to be conspicuous by their absence. The only other sounds seem to be your feet crunching through fallen leaves and the occasional snap of a rotting branch or twig underfoot. Glancing nervously about you, you begin to feel isolated and vulnerable.

“Superstitious nonsense.” You mutter to yourself. “It’s just a wood, same as any other.” Subconsciously, your fingers tighten around the hilt of your sword.

You walk for a couple of hours. Progress is slow as you trudge onwards, stepping over fallen branches covered in fungi and exposed twisted tree roots. Your legs aching, you begin to regret your sentimentality at allowing your horse to leave. Throwing down your pack, you sit down against the foot of a tree and rest your aching feet.

“What am I doing?” You sigh, not for the first time wondering what you were thinking to set out on this foolish quest to rescue the princess. The enchantress awaits with an army of orcs to protect her. You’re no soldier and you’re certainly not a mage. This will probably end very badly for you. You reach into your pack, pulling out your leather flask and picking out a piece of dried bread. After swiftly devouring the bread, you raise the flask to your lips. As you tilt back your head, your eyes widen as you find yourself staring into the black eyes of a giant spider scuttling down the trunk of the tree above you. It looms over you, fangs protruding from its jaws which click open and closed.

“Fuck!” You gasp in terror, throwing yourself forward just as it drops down. As it scuttles on its spindly legs towards you, you spring to your feet and reach for your sword. Pulling it free of the scabbard, you swing it down onto the spider, cleaving its head in two.
